Seven days simply isn’t enough to recognize the individuals who dedicate their lives to supporting people with developmental disabilities. That’s why, while Direct Support Professional (DSP) Week is recognized nationally in mid-September, Bello Machre dedicated the entire month to celebrating our DSPs. In an op-ed published by the Severna Park Voice, Bello Machre President & CEO Dr. Robert Ireland highlights the profound impact these dedicated professionals make every single day.
DSPs do far more than provide care; they act as job coaches, problem solvers, advocates, and trusted companions. They help individuals develop daily living skills, find meaningful employment, explore their communities, and build lasting relationships.
Dr. Ireland shared the story of Douglas, who came to Bello Machre a year ago feeling hesitant and closed off due to past experiences. With patience, empathy, and care, his DSPs broke through those barriers. Over time, Douglas learned to trust his support team, formed deep connections, and began to thrive in his daily life, giving his mother, Caryn, and their family peace of mind.
Douglas’s journey represents just one of countless lives transformed by DSPs across Maryland. However, sustaining this high standard of care requires strong community investment. Dr. Ireland calls for continued investment in the DSP workforce across Maryland, emphasizing the importance of competitive wages, strong benefits, professional development, and opportunities for rewarding, long-term careers.
