A Powerful Story of Strength, Inclusion and Community in Action
Bello Machre is proud to be featured in Thriving Together: The Power of Inclusion, a new documentary that shines a powerful spotlight on the lives, talents, and resilience of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Produced by the Community Media Center of Carroll County, this 60-minute film follows the journeys of four individuals receiving services through local organizations—including Bello Machre, The Arc Carroll County, Target Community & Educational Services, Inc., and Penn-Mar Human Services—as they navigate life, work, and community with strength and purpose.
Representing Bello Machre is Todd, lovingly known as Spike—a passionate and creative man whose woodworking skills, kind spirit, and drive for independence make him a shining example of what’s possible when inclusion leads the way.

What is Thriving Together About?
Thriving Together: The Power of Inclusion is more than just a documentary on IDD. It’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and community.
The film shares authentic stories of four individuals, some communicative, some non-communicative, as they engage in residential living, education, employment, and community day services. Through their daily experiences, we see how small wins can become big accomplishments, and how ability, not disability, tells the real story.
“This film isn’t just about disabilities, it’s about possibility,” says Dr. Robert Ireland, President & CEO of Bello Machre. “Spike’s story, along with the others featured, reminds us what happens when people are given the right support, the right opportunities, and the chance to be seen for who they truly are.”
Why Stories Like This Matter
For too long, people with IDD have been defined by stereotypes instead of strengths. This documentary challenges those outdated narratives by:
- Highlighting the abilities and contributions of individuals with IDD
- Promoting inclusion and acceptance in Maryland communities
- Showing how organizations like Bello Machre support meaningful independence
- Giving viewers a deeper understanding of the value of direct support professionals (DSPs) and service teams
Meet Spike: Creativity and Independence in Action
Spike, who receives support through Bello Machre, is a skilled woodworker with a gift for turning raw materials into beautiful works of art. With the help of his team, he’s even learned to use a laser engraver to create intricate, customized pieces. His work will be showcased at the film screening’s silent auction, and his journey will remind viewers what happens when people are empowered to live life on their terms.
